Using Cotton Yarn

Thursday, February 16, 2023

Cotton is a non-allergenic natural fibre that doesn't irritate sensitive skin.

Cotton:

  • Is one of the easiest yarns to dye, because of its absorbency.
  • Keeps the body cool in summer and warm in winter - it is an excellent conductor.
  • Breathes easily as a result of its unique fibre structure.
  • Softness makes it a perfect yarn for garments worn close to the skin.
  • Adaptability allows it to blend easily with most other fibres.
  • Has a high absorbency rate - it can hold up to 27 times its own weight in water.
  • Becomes stronger when wet.
  • Is a natural product and contains no chemicals.

Wow, what a perfect yarn for newborns through to the elderly. And Certified organic yarn is all of that and more.

The photo above is a set of garments that I love making for family and friends with newborns.

Erika Knight, in her book "Natural Nursery Knits", has some amazing garments to make. I have made a number out of this book and never been disappointed.
The jumper is one of her patterns, I have adapted the boots from another. The beanie is my design and the pattern is available for download. The beanie pattern covers newborns through to adults.

The yarn used for all garments is Pakucho Certified Organic Cotton Yarn 10plyTry dyeing the natural and cream yarns for some unique colours.

So you love the thought of organic cotton yarn, but you are struggling to find patterns?

There is a simple answer, adjust woollen patterns for cotton yarns.

I know that a swatch is something we all try and avoid. But it will be well worth the small amount of effort taken, for correct needle sizes and a beautiful end product.
An added bonus - make the swatch large enough to use as a wash cloth.

Other uses of swatches:

For cotton:
Makeup remover
Dish cloth
Keep your swatches and sew together for a funky knee rug

For 100% wool:
Sew 2 swatches together and use as a pot holder (DO NOT USE if the yarn has a synthetic component)
Keep your swatches and sew together for a funky knee rug

If your swatch measures:

  • Too small - use larger needles.
  • Larger than the pattern specifies - use smaller needles.

I have done this numerous times, one of which was:

Designer: Naturally
Yarn Used: Pakucho Certified Organic Cotton Yarn 10ply
Yarn Quantity: 880gms to fit size 117cm men's jumper
Pattern Link: This pattern is no longer available, it is worth looking at the others they have available
Some are very similar.

I hope that I have tweaked your imagination and curiosity. Pursue using the Certified Organic cotton yarns and you won't be disappointed. Their softness is amazing.

Enjoy creating!!
